The Nakba Generation
This series features interviews with individuals born in Palestine around the time of the Nakba, who are now members of the global diaspora. According to the United Nations, “The Nakba, which means “catastrophe” in Arabic, refers to the mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Before the Nakba, Palestine was a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society.” Importantly, Zionism did not begin with the Nakba, the Nakba is simply the moment in which Palestine was illegally partitioned, leading to the permanent displacement of over half of the population of Palestine, as well as the death of many Palestinians. Many individuals born before the Nakba not only survived this horrific event but also survived many years of Zionist colonialism before the Nakba itself. Individuals born directly after or during the Nakba have witnessed the continued Israeli occupation of Palestine in all its stages. This series seeks to document their experiences.
All of these interviews have been conducted in Spanish and translated to English. It is worth noting that many of the individuals interviewed speak Arabic as a first language and Spanish as a second, and as such some of the translations has had to be approximated into English. Some of these interviews are in video format, while others have been transcribed to provide certain individuals with complete anonymity due to their need to travel to Palestine to see family and fear of the Israeli occupation’s surveillance should they speak out with their name attached.
